Dolphin for Pad V1.0 enters beta stages

Android Central

Remember when Dolphin v6.0 was released? At the time of release, MoboTap had just announced their new funding from Sequioa Capital and let it be known they would be using that funding for further developments. Here we are a short time later, and they've now made available Dolphin for Pad in beta form. Sharing many of the same features from Dolphin HD, Dolphin for Pad is a re-worked version built and designed for Honeycomb tablets. Given that it is a beta, some stuff remains needing to be ported over but for now you get:

  • Gestures
  • Add-ons
  • Multi-touch-zoom
  • Tabbed browsing
  • Side bars: Left side bar will change into windows list you opened

The folk from MoboTap will be looking for feedback on this release so if you have an Android tablet kicking around -- give it a shot and let them know how it's working for you or any other suggestions may have. Download link can be found beyond the break.

Windows 8 Explorer to feature Ribbon UI, SkyDrive and Mesh integration?

windows 8 explorer ribbon
Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott have posted a second look at some of the early changes which have surface in Windows 8 milestone 3. First there was the restyled Welcome Screen, and now it appears that Microsoft is toying with bringing the Ribbon UI to Explorer.

The Ribbon, like in Microsoft Word and Excel, is context-aware, adding tabs for specific tasks which apply to the folder you're viewing -- such as library or picture management. You can also make out two new buttons in the status bar, which allow you to change the current folder's view style.

It's clear from all the placeholder images and repeated elements that this is very much a work in progress, but featuring the Ribbon more prominently in Windows 8 would certainly be a logical progression for Microsoft. It's slowly become more ubiquitous, moving beyond Office and into Wordpad, Paint, and several of the Windows Live Essentials applications.

There's more to the screenshots than the Ribbon UI, however. Our friend Long Zheng has noted two interesting elements in the images: Web sharing and sync (image after the break). That would likely mean users will be able to quickly upload files to SkyDrive and synchronize using Live Mesh right from Explorer in Windows 8. That's not a total surprise considering many of the earliest leaked images of Windows 8 showed Windows Live integration on the desktop.

Samsung-Funded Study Finds Samsung's 3DTVs Hurt Your Eyes (Updated) [3dTv]

Whoops! Looks like we shouldn't have funded that university study on the effects of looking at 3DTVs, probably says some guy at Samsung right now. Probably, because the study found that 3DTVs cause eye strain and fatigue, Ars reports. More »

How a Hacker Bootlegged the Slot Machine Industry [Gambling]

No one sets out to be an international slot machine kingpin: it just sort of happens. Our friends over at Wired took a look at Rodolfo Rodriguez Cabrera, who went from a Cuban engineering student to the head of a multi-million dollar bootlegging scheme. More »

Canon launches X Mark I Mouse Lite, pairs ten-digit calculator and Bluetooth laser mouse (video)

Have you ever looked longingly at your mouse, noting its underutilized input device real estate? Canon has, replacing that excessive unused space with a built-in calculator in its X Mark I Mouse, announced today for folks in the US. (If you'll recall, we spent a few quality moments with this guy in Germany last year at Photokina.) The combo device provides users with both a physical ten-digit adding machine and a numeric Bluetooth 2.0 keypad, which you can use seamlessly with a variety of apps, replacing the number pad now absent on many desktop and portable keyboards. The company's camera design team helped to create the hybrid input device, which also includes a trio of mouse buttons and laser tracking. Canon also announced its X Mark I Keypad, a full-size calculator with Bluetooth support that's powered by either AAA batteries or a built-in solar panel. Both devices will be available for $60 in August and September, respectively, and will ship in both black and white.

Windows 8 now available to OEMs via Microsoft Connect

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners -- major players like HP -- have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven't been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore -- which is being referred to as History Vault -- has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We've also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It's believed that you'll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that's left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

Touchscreen Keyboard Morphs to Fit Your Typing Style [Keyboards]

Typing on a touchscreen is not one of life's pleasures: the one-size-fits-all nature of most virtual keyboards is a hassle that puts many of us off using them. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen journalists put down an iPad, for instance, and pick up a laptop or netbook to do some serious notetaking or writing. More »

Google On The Nortel Loss, Patents As Government-Granted Monopolies, And Plates Of Spaghetti

Back in early April, Kent Walker, Google's Senior Vice President & General Counsel, wrote a post on the Google blog titled "Patents and innovation". The reason behind the post was clear: Google was feeling the pressure in the patent space after multiple attacks against them and their partners. And now they were going to do something about it. In his post, Walker noted that Google had laid down the initial "stalking-horse" bid for over 6,000 patents that were up for sale due to the Nortel bankruptcy. "If successful, we hope this portfolio will not only create a disincentive for others to sue Google, but also help us, our partners and the open source community?which is integrally involved in projects like Android and Chrome?continue to innovate," Walker wrote.

Bing begins roll out of HTML5-enhanced search interface

Bing transitions
Bing's new HTML5-and-CSS3-enhanced search interface, which was first demonstrated back in September 2010 to showcase the power of IE9, has started to roll out.

The most notable addition to the new interface is is smooth page transitions -- the fade in and out -- and navigation tabs (maps, images, videos, etc.) now persistently float at the top of the page. WinRumors is also reporting that a feature reminiscent of Google Instant search is being added to Bing, with page elements smoothly transitioning in and out as you type in your search query.

If you want to try out the new Bing UI, your best bet is to set your locale to United States - English and pray that you're part of the initial roll out. Alternatively, just wait a few days until MIX 2011, Microsoft's Web developer conference, which is when the new Bing UI should be officially launched.
